Result from Junior National Judo Championship 2004
This is the second consecutive year that Lucas has won Bronze at the National Championships. He narrowly lost in the semi-final against his arch nemesis Jacob Price, from Pinewood, by a yuko to a koka but then came back strongly in the Bronze medal fight. Here he met Tyrell Clark-Harewood from Moberly, whom he destroyed with a koka, a yuko and finally an ippon throw, all with different techniques.
Ironically it was Tyrell's twin brother Kyle who won the gold - yet Lucas had earlier beaten both of these at the Heart of England Championships in September! This year then, Lucas has beaten both the 'A' and 'B' band National Champions at U34kg in different competitions - his own National Championship must potentially be there.
Result from Junior National Judo Championship 2003
On Sunday 7th December Lucas Rowe competed in the Junior 'A' band Nationals at High Wycombe. It was the first year he old enough to be eligible to compete (10 years old).
Being the smallest and youngest in the Midlands Team he had the honour of leading the squad in the parade holding the Midlands Team placard aloft to open the competition.
Unfortunately Lucas lost his first fight immediately putting him out of contention for Gold and Silver. However, in a great comeback, he then won 5 conseutive fights to take the bronze medal winning all by ippon throws, bar one golden score victory. Not only did he take the bronze but ended up winning more fights than the eventual gold medallist because of having to fight all the way through the repechage. For this Lucas' results were recognised with the 'Performance of the Day' Award which was presented by Georgina Singleton.
Lucas Rowe:
At the start of this year Lucas' ambition was simply to make the Midland Area Squad - to become the Midland Champion and go on to win a National Bronze medal was more than he could have hoped for.
Lucas started judo at the age of 4 and had four frustrating years until he was 8 before he was old enough to enter competition, being thrown in at the deep end with the Kent Junior International being just days after his birthday.
Since then he has had regular success finishing top of his club's medal table in 2002, his first full year of competition and leading it again in 2003. For the last two years he has also won Kettering Premier Judo Club's Melvyn Wright Trophy for the Best Junior Player at its annual awards ceremony. Being small for his age he has had to get used training with bigger partners and now that there are players of his size to train with he sticks to the bigger players to even up the competition!
It is not just contest that Lucas is interested in. One of this years goals is to gain his first junior referee qualification and last year at the age of 8 he helped his Dad practise for his 1st Dan theory by being his uke at home before the grading - and correcting more than a few of his Dad's techniques!
Short term goals are to gain greater success at higher level Open and Age Banded competitions and then to be selected for the Midland Area Squad and fight in the Nationals. In 2002 and 2003 Lucas spent time training in Japan in the summer and he would really like to represent his club and Area in international competition.
Longer term becoming part of the cadet squad is a primary aim. Seeing older players who train at the club with the GB flag on their gi is a definite incentive. With the ambition of youth the 2012 and 2016 Olympics and intervening World Championships figure in Lucas' plans. He knows that he has to keep on his toes because his sister, Connie, turns 8 in June and will be embarking on her judo career too.
