6 - Simon Oliver Courses

Having spent the best part of a decade following the school system Shotokan with the body of a middle aged man, I decided to spread my wings and find out how karate should be applied to make an effective self defence system for people of all ages. This journey led me into the dojos of many very competent instructors/teachers, one of those being Simon Oliver.

I found that the commercialised version of Shotokan often loses the kuden (verbal explanation) behind why we do things and how they should work. Combined with the need to make competition karate pleasing to view has resulted in significant changes to the art of karate, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing sports system, ideally suited for the younger person.

Having trained with some interesting and exciting teachers over the past few years, I decided to help increase the opportunity for local karateka to train with national and international instructors by hosting some local karate events.

Having hosted a very successful workshop in May, we plan to continue the trend with a one day workshop conducted by Simon Oliver for the 29th June 2003, to be held at the Grove Green Community Centre in Maidstone Kent. Details of the course can be obtained from the 'Events' link on our website at www.mmaconsultancy.com/Karate or by telephoning us on 01622 736990.

The seminar is split into 3 sessions. Firstly a 2 hour children's workshop on kata Oyo, secondly an adult workshop on kata Oyo and finally a basic Kobudo lesson using the 5 most common weapons.

Simon Oliver is a well known international instructor who also runs a full time dojo in Nottingham. He holds qualification in many martial arts, including Godan in (motobu) Shorin-ryu, Tananouchi-ryu jujitsu, Katori shinto-ryu, Yondan in JKA Shotokan and Goju-ryu, Sandan in Judo and Aikido, Nidan in Kofukan Shito-ryu, Shodan in Wado-ryu. This wide range of skills make shim a very interesting instructor in close quarter techniques and applications of the meaning of kata techniques.

Any club owner who would like a link on our site is also welcome to submit details from the website.
