Aikido

Aikido Arts Ki Exercises Ki Meditation Ki Breathing Kiatsu Misogi
Aikido means "The way to union with the Ki of the universe". The universe signifies nature itself. Ki-Aikido is the way to learn how to become one with the universe through the Ki Principle of "Mind moves body". To "become one with universe" means to understand the universal mind.

Everybody has a mind and body. Mind and body are originally one. Our body is visible therefore we can understand its existence easily. However, the mind is invisible therefore we tend to forget about it. It is difficult to know your own mind correctly. The mind moves body always. If your mind is positive, your body is also positive.

Ki Development Classes
The fundamental purpose of Ki training is unification of mind and body. Ki development classes teach us how to maintain unification of mind and body in our daily lives. This means we will be able to perform to the best of our ability in all circumstances.
Ki exercises teach how to move and exercise the body without losing your balance or mind and body unification. They also help developing correct posture and how to maintain mind and body unification in a variety of different postures.
Ki breathing is whole body breathing which not only promotes health but mental calmness as well.
Ki mediation strengthens the state of mind and body unity at a deep subconscious level to fully integrate what you have learned in the other methods.
Kiatsu therapy is a method of directly or indirectly sending Ki to an injured or weakened part of the body thereby rejuvenating the life force and enabling the body to heal itself.
Misogi purpose is to unify mind and body in the midst of chaos. The word misogi comes from the Shinto religion and means "to go to the river and cleanse oneself". This word is used in Aikido for certain breathing and meditation exercises because they have a cleansing effect on the mind and body.

Every Wednesday lunchtime at 12.05 for 50 mins
Classes will cost £8 but your first class will be absolutely FREE
London can be a violent place, so learning how to look after yourself is a wise precaution. JiuJitsu is a martial art designed principally for practical self-defence in a modern setting.
In training sessions, you will learn how to defend yourself from everything from punches, grabs, and shoves to head-butts, chokes and kicks. You will learn how to deal with multiple attackers, armed or otherwise.
By training regularly you will improve your
*General fitness*Flexibility*Co-ordination*Reaction time*Self confidence*
Perhaps, even more importantly than all these you will also gain the kind of mental control required to think your way through and safely out of potentially dangerous encounters.
The philosophy underlying Jiu Jitsu, at least in part, is the belief that you can overcome aggression by seeming to yield to it by moving with it and turning it to your advantage. Thus it is sometimes said that Jiu Jitsu is an equaliser: The size, strength and weight of the attacker is not important.
Because Jiu Jitsu does not rely on strength it can be practised by: Men and women and people of any size Bookings or enquiries, please call 020 7074 6000or email mail@templeton-recruitment.com

Wing Chun

New class beginning Thursday 9th October
Lunchtimes @ 1:05- 1:55 drop in class, £8 per session,
an evening course will follow.
Martial Art created by a woman, with emphasis on agility, the breath, flexibility and practicality.

Wing Chun is a very practical, logical and efficient system of self-defense. It evolved out of the need for a system that was highly practical but did not take a lifetime to learn.

Wing Chun relies on sensitivity and the redirection of force when dealing with an opponent, as opposed to meeting force with force, as is displayed in other styles of martial arts, i.e. karate. This makes it suitable for all ages and sexes.
The core concept of Wing Chun is that of economy of motion, i.e. the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. And so attacks, counter-attacks, parries, etc. will always take the most direct route.
Easy to learn but challenging
Practical: To attack is to defend
Develop automatic Reflex Action
Physically flexible
Very Effective Self-Defence
sticking Hands: Blocking Superfluous
Fluid Movements Hardness & Softness used in harmony
According to legend, Ng Mui studied the White Crane style before she ever invented WingTjun. The name of course, comes from her first student, Yim Wing Tjun, also a woman.

The story goes that she taught her system to Yim Wing Tjun so that she could defend herself against a local bully. As far as we know, WingTjun is the only kung fu system developed by a woman and it is more than 250 years old! This might also be the reason that Wing Tjun is concerned with the conservation of energy, so you don't need to develop the kind of impressive, but ultimately clumsy power of a bodybuilder, in order to overcome your opponent.

In the beginning, WingTjun was taught from Fatshan, a town in Southern China. Most of the teachers there operated a closed-door policy, which led to much controversy about the different WingTjun interpretations practised today.

The different spellings are used to differentiate the teacher's different interpretations of the same style. This is why you find WingTsun, Wing Chun, Ving Tsun, Wing Tchun and our own WingTjun! (Actually, WingTjun is phonetically closer to the Cantonese pronunciation for this system than any of the other spellings.) But the real difference is that WingTsun and WingTjun are the most logical and integrated systems of all.

Although all are essentially the same style, incorporating the three forms, Siu Nim Tau, Chum Kiu and Biu Tze, as well as the Wooden Dummy, the Eighth-Cutting Knives (Butterfly knives or Double-Broadsword), and the Long Pole.

Sifu Tam's in-depth studies of traditional Shaolin Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Kickboxing, Taekwondo & grappling has served to improve his understanding of Martial Arts in its entirety, and continues to assist him in being the best Instructor he can be.
WHAT IS WINGTJUN KUNG FU?
What are the principles of WingTjun Kung?
SIFU TAM: WingTjun is a very practical system. The basic concept is that to attack is to defend, and to attack efficiently requires that we use the shortest distance to the opponent's body. E.g. if I take up a face-to-face opening stance, my left hand will be closer to your nose. That is the shortest distance of attack. Even though WingTjun is actually very fast, we don't normally talk about speed we just go for the shortest distance, which automatically generates the effect of greater speed.
What is the first form? SIU NIM TAU (Little Idea)
SIFU TAM: The first form is the basic training for all that follows. The variations in techniques, which make up the applications of the Kung Fu system in its entirety, comes from the first three forms, including Chi Sau and Wooden Dummy techniques. This is so that if a beginner isn't able to gain sufficient skill in the Siu Nim Tau and specifically the 'single' and 'double' techniques of the form, he will never be able to master the more advanced techniques. The set of repetitious movements is the slowest but the most important and fundamental training for the beginner, and strengthens both the upper and lower regions of the body. It also offers excellent respiratory training - the so-called 'chi-kung' in Chinese Kung Fu. So this form is also called the 'Chi-Kung' form.
What is the second form? CHUM KIU (Seeking Arms)
SIFU TAM: In WingTjun, in defending, we can uncover more variations of hand techniques than kicking techniques. If we can discover the direction of our opponent's arm movements, we can be sure of the area of his attack. And this 'discovering' or 'uncovering' of our opponent's attacks is the purpose for the Chum Kiu form - it's function is just like radar.
What is CHI SAU? (Sticky Hands)
SIFU TAM: The most important part of Chi Sau training is the exercises for developing an acute sense of touch. The strength of an attack cannot be gauged visually. Thus an acute sense of touch enables the practitioner - not only to detect the strength of the opponent, but also the direction in which the force is travelling. This will enable us to change our movements to cope with our opponent', to gain an advantage over him and finally defeat him.
What is LAT SAU? (Free Hand Fighting)
SIFU TAM: Lat Sau is one of the most important exercises in the whole teaching system. If we say Chi Sau is for developing sensitivity to deal with the changes in the opponent's movements, then Lat Sau is the second step, in which one puts that sensitivity to use.
It is just like real free-fighting training, except that nobody really applies heavy power and so they will not hurt their training partner. Without Lat Sau, no matter how many years one has studied Chi Sau techniques it will feel as though you are trying to swim on dry land, if you come across someone who has mastered both Chi Sau and Lat Sau techniques!
What is the third form? BIU TZE (Thrusting Fingers)
SIFU TAM: This form, which is comprised mostly of techniques of the palm and fingers, is mainly for attacking. The five fingers of the hand are straightened before, with a flexible force, being thrust forward towards the target. This force is actually a kind of strong flexibility of the vibratory force created as the arm is forcefully extended, and is totally different from that of the thrusting fingers. This form includes techniques for steps, grappling, hand releasing, and elbow and wrist movements. A skilful practitioner of the Biu Tze form will present the techniques in an elegant and dignified way, with a flexible but deadly force.
What is MOK YAN CHONG? (The Wooden Dummy)
SIFU TAM: The Wooden Dummy techniques are the most advanced in the system and it consists of 116 movements, of which 16 are kicking movements: 8 for each foot. Knowledge of the secrets of the application of the Wooden Dummy techniques will enable the practitioner to react much more quickly than someone who applies only the techniques of the other forms. A practitioner, who reacts more slowly and is weaker than his opponents, will very often defeat stronger opponents, if he/she has achieved some skill of the Wooden Dummy techniques.
